About
I am the author of three books: The memoir Save the Date: The Occasional Mortifications of a Serial Wedding Guest, published by Riverhead in 2014, and two young adult novels, both published by FSG Books for Young Readers—Unclaimed Baggage, 2018, and That’s Debatable, 2022. That's Debatable was an Alabama Library Association Best Teen Book of the Year and 2023 Rise Feminist Book Project Honoree, and Unclaimed Baggage wasa California Young Reader Medal nominee for ’22-’23. Save the Date received a huge array of positive press coverage, and in a New York Times book review by the writer Rebecca Traister, I was called, to my great honor, “Emily Post’s worst nightmare.”
I am also a longtime freelance writer and editor who is a frequent contributor to the New York Times book review. I’ve written widely for publications including Esquire, Fortune, GQ, Glamour, the New York Times, the L.A. Times, New York Magazine, Publishers Weekly, the Week, and more. I was a staff writer for the Village Voice, the managing editor at Mental Floss magazine, and a senior writer for The Atlantic.
About a million years ago, I was the managing editor for the now-defunct, pop-culture skewering Radar magazine, where I put out a trash-can fire at least once. More recently, I created the Beyond the Noise yoga and writing retreat, which I run with Elizabeth Voetsch. I am available for editorial consultation and writing guidance and coaching.
I live with my husband and dog in New York’s Hudson Valley, where I serve on the Marbletown Board of Ethics and am a trustee of the Stone Ridge Library.
